This week, I armed myself with one thing: a better attitude. I decided to go with the flow, to breathe flexibility, to not entertain the negative, and to be light. And you know what? It worked. I know. I’m not exactly inventing the wheel here.
It wasn’t easy–sometimes I felt like a toddler stomping her feet in Toys-R-Us. But I don’t WANT to have a better attitude! I want to complain! But I did. I let whatever was bugging me slide right on by, and while it absolutely didn’t come easy, it actually worked. I focused on happy, and so I felt happy.
I’m not some perpetually negative sour puss who revels in complaining, but I do think that I, and I can’t be alone here, sometimes wallow in the negative because there’s some comfort in complaining–we call it venting–to another person. I guess I’ve learned that while it can feel good to vent, that stuff seeps in. It’s got claws, and they dig in deep and hold on tight and before you know it, you’re dreading doing the thing you have to do every day before the day even begins. And by you, I mean me.
So! Better attitudes=more smiles. More smiles=happier interactions. Happier interactions=smoother days. Smoother days=a me that feels rejuvenated on a Friday instead of wiped out.
This Friday is extra Fancy because it’s cold out, and it’s November, and my birthday is in 6 days, and that technically means it’s birthday week, even though birthday week this year will extend past my birthday, and I don’t care. #FancyDrinkFriday!
This week it’s a hot toddy, which is really just a cocktail that is hot, instead of icy cold. It took some getting used to, but on a cold, blustery night, when you’re maybe nursing a little sniffle, it’s just what the doctor ordered.
Ginger Lemon Hot Toddy
- 1 ounce vodka
- 1/2 ounce lemon juice
- 1 slice of lemon
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 4 ounces ginger tea
- Add vodka and lemon juice to the bottom of a mug. Add the lemon slice and honey. Set aside.
- Take a 2-3 inch piece of ginger, peeled, and slice it into rings. Fill a small sauce pan with water and bring to a boil. Let boil for about 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and let steep for another 5 minutes. (This is ginger tea!)
- Pour the hot ginger tea over the honey/lemon/vodka. Give it a stir. Go sit by a fire and contemplate the meaning of life.
