I’m a huge football fan. It started in high school, which was inevitable considering I grew up in one of those “Friday Night Lights” towns, literally, and developed, over years of college tailgating and Sunday game days, into a full fledged love. I love the game, sure, but that’s so not the point. It’s about the spirit, the camaraderie, the talking about things that you clearly have no control over, and, yes, the food.
Me and The Internet agree that the Super Bowl is as much about the food as it is the football. And whether you are having a big gathering or are just celebrating with you and one more, I’ve got plenty of recipes, from appetizers, to crowd-pleasing entrees, to delectable desserts, that will help you cheer on your favorite team. Even if they were embarrassingly far away from actually going to New Orleans.
Let’s start at the start.
Appetizers should be dip-able and finger-food-friendly. These are a couple of my favorites.
Crispy Fried Pickle Chips. If not for the Super Bowl, when?
Easy Homemade Salsa. Never buy a jar again, it’s that good.
Baked Brie Minis. For the fancy football fan.
Basic Hummus. Hummus is always welcome at the party.
Fried Mozzarella Sticks. This will be happening in my neck of the woods.
Creamy Tomatillo Dip. The best dip, ever. Serve with Fritos please.
Jalapeno Skillet Cornbread. While not technically an appetizer, it goes perfectly with most Super Bowl Entrees, which brings me to my next point.
No one wants to be stuck in the kitchen while everyone else is having fun watching the game, or better, the Puppy Bowl. Bless whoever came up with that. That means that entrees need to be either really simple to make, or able to be made in a slow-cooker. All of these meet those stipulations, while being filling and big enough for a crowd.
Marinated Carne Asada. It’s perfect for nachos, fajitas, or tacos–they’re tender and flavorful perfection. Make ahead and reheat when ready to serve!
Braised and Shredded Beef Sandwiches. Think sloppy joe meets pulled pork. Pile high on a buttered roll and you’re well on your way to game day bliss. (Also perfect for a slow cooker! Bonus!)
Buffalo Chicken Baked Flautas. Easy, fast, and buffalo. Everything you need for football. Buy a rotisserie chicken to cut down a step, and all you have to do is shred, mix, fill, then bake.
Baked Chicken Taquitos. Speaking of baked, if you’re not into buffalo, these are just as good!
Oven Baked Ribs with Barbecue Sauce. These crowd pleasers are literally fall-off-the-bone. Low and slow is the trick here, so start these in the morning so they’ll be tender by the time guests arive!
Cajun Shrimp Boil. If you’re going for the New Orleans themed party, this is perfect. The shrimp are actually best served cold, which means you can make this up to a day in advance, cutting down on day-of kitchen time.
One-Pot Jambalaya. Again, for the New Orleans route. Also, it’s delicious, easy, and a one-pot meal.
Now or Never Chili. Easy, even better if it’s made a day in advance, and sure to please your football-loving friends.
Mama’s Pulled Pork. No game-day round up would be the same without it. It’s my absolute favorite. And update! I made it in a slow cooker last weekend and it worked wonderfully.
Game-day desserts need to be no-fuss and portable. Leave the molten chocolate cake for another day. All of these desserts can be made a day or two in advance, so they’re perfect for your sweet tooth.
Salted Caramel Chocolate Pretzel Bark. Easy to make, even easier to eat.
Spiced Brown Sugar Cookies. One of my favorites.
Fudge Brownies with Pretzel Crust. Everyone loves a brownie, and with a little added crunch, these are winners.
Salted Celebration Cookies. Celebration is in the name. No brainer.
Chocolate Chip Cookies. Basic, classic, delicious.
You’re all set for the big game. My menu consists of my deep fryer and whatever else I get my hands on. Chicken tenders, pickles, hot peppers, mozzarella–those have all been requested, of course with an assortment of dipping sauces. Can I fry dessert? We shall see.
